The word Calaboose is a modification of the spanish word calabozo meaning dungeon. With walls and roof build from limestone and morter, this is indeed a dungeon for those who broke the law in our pioneer days. Built in 1878, it is still very much intact. Although not open to the public except on rare occasions, you can still get a feel of what it would have been like to be incarcerated here. A quick peek through the small barred window on each side, would convince anyone not to break the laws.
