Der Eisenbahnunfall von Elsterwerda am 20. November 1997 war eine Explosions- und Brandkatastrophe, ausgelöst durch einen mit Benzin beladenen Zug der Deutschen Bahn, der wegen überhöhter Geschwindigkeit im Bahnhof Elsterwerda entgleiste, weil seine Bremsanlage nicht ordnungsgemäß in Betrieb genommen worden war. Es kamen zwei Feuerwehrleute ums Leben. Der Gedenkstein im Bahnhofsvorfeld erinnert an diese schwere Katastrophe.

The railway accident of Elsterwerda on 20 November 1997 was an explosion and fire disaster , triggered by a gasoline train of Deutsche Bahn , which derailed due to speeding in Elsterwerda Station because its brake system had not been correctly commissioned . There were two firefighters killed . The memorial stone near the station reminded of this major disaster .
