Little American Island was home to Minnesota’s only profitable gold mine which operated during the Rainy Lake “Gold Rush” from 1893-98. Only remnants of the shafts and a few pieces of equipment are visible along the interpretive trail. Rangers from Voyageurs National Park give tours of the island and lead visitors past a few remaining vestiges from the operation. The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
