This former Methodist-Episcopal church was built in 1867 and is referred to as Grout Church because the name on the deed was “Zena Grout and others.” The most noteworthy feature of this one-room church is the impressive solid native walnut altar which spans the entire length of the alcove.
The final service was held in 1984, and members sold the building to the Kalona Historical Society for $1, and it was moved to the village the following year. A glass case at the entrance holds historical mementoes of the church.
The white frame church contrasts against the brilliant rose gardens on the south edge of the village. Other historical buildings represent Kalona’s Amish and Mennonite heritage. The village is open 9:30-4, Monday-Saturday, April –October, and 11-3 Monday-Saturday during the winter months. Admission is charged, but the church is near the sidewalk and can be easily seen from the entrance.
