The Bulldog has been the mascot of South Carolina State University since 1927 when the institution was known as the South Carolina State Agriculture and Mechanical Institute.

This life size bronze sculpture of a bulldog was sculpted by Willard Newman Hirsch and installed in 1978 in front of the Donma Administration Building. The 22" high bulldog stands on 25" high by 32" long stone pedestal. This sculpture is the basis for a much larger bulldog sculpture that stands on top of a brick wall at the entrance to the university campus.
