The memorial is constructed of Milford pink granite and black granite and each section is about 18 inches high encircling the pathways in Draper Park. The War Memorial began its journey in 1989 with a committee to come up with a proposal for a new memorial. The committee was faced with a design problem because of the want to list all 3,400 names of the veterans. In 1990 a competition was announced for the design with the committee receiving 65 proposals. The proposals were placed on public exhibition with the design by Robert Desmond was overwhelming liked.

The next obstacle was funding since the construction bids far outweighed the allocated monies from the town. The people of Milford united and poured donations into the town to enable the building of the memorial.

There are 3,415 names of veterans of WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam war etched into the Milford pink granite and black granite sections. The pink granite was obtained from local quarries. Those veterans that were killed in action are inscribed in the black granite sections.
