Completed in 1755, this baroque church was the first building in La Barceloneta. It was designed by the engineer lieutenant colonel Pedro Martín Cermeño and executed under the direction of Barcelona architects Damián and Francisco Ribas Paredes.
The original church had a central dome maintained on four pillars. In 1863 the church was extended by Elijah Rogent (Architect 1821-1897), adopting a structure of three buildings with a false roof, on which he added a second dome.
Built low so that the cannon in the then Ciutadella fort could fire over it if necessary, it bears images of St Michael (Miquel) and two other saints considered protectors of the Catalan fishing fleet: Sant Elm and Santa Maria de Cervelló. On the facade, the original statue of sant Miquel by Pere Costa, was destroyed in 1936 and replaced in 1992 by the work of a new sculptor, Emili Colom (1924-2007).
A sign on the outside wall beside the church says that Ferdinand Lesseps, the French engineer who designed the Suez Canal, did a stint as France’s consul-general in Barcelona and lived in the house to the right of the church.
