The Covert family donated the area that is now cohort Park to Travis County in 1938. In the 1970s Travis County transferred it to the city of Austin, which maintains it today as one of the most popular parks in the city.

Mama Blaster has been coming to mount Donnell since the 1980s, but never realized that the "real" name of this area was Covert Park until she saw the spiffy new sign at the foot of the stairs leading to the top of Mount Bonnell.

Mount Bonnell is a well-loved Austin treasure, and it is a great place to watch the sunrise over the city or set over the Hill Country. Climbing Mt. Bonnell is number 18 on the list of 365 things to do in Austin: (visit link)

"18. Climb Mount Bonnell

I hope all of you are sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions! We are midway through January so if you have gone this far you are doing good. I have heard that it takes 20 days to make something a habit so in an effort to help all those that want to “work out more” or “drop those extra pounds” how about giving the 102 (give or take) steps up to the top of Mount Bonnell a try.

I debated putting a picture of the view from the top but thought it would be more of an accomplishment to actually get to the top and see for yourself the breathtaking views from the top.

Mount Bonnell is one of Austin’s oldest touring attractions, dating back to the 1850’s as it is the highest point in Austin City Limits reaching 785 feet tall.

It is a FREE activity, when you reach the top you get truly breathtaking views of Downtown Austin and the 360 bridge, it is by far the best place to go for a panoramic view of the city.

To get to Mount Bonnell:
Take 35th Street past Camp Mabry
Go left at the fork onto Old Bull Creek Road
Right on Mount Bonnell Road (You will start to see parking on your left)
