John Monaghan has the distinction of being the first white Australian male of the Shoalhaven District born on the southern side of the Shoalhaven River. Plaques (marble & bronze) at the base of the fountain state:

"The Monaghan Memorial Fountain".

"Erected by the public of Shoalhaven to the memory of the late John Monaghan, Esq. J.P. the first white Australian male born in the Shoalhaven District south of the river. Also one who rendered invaluable services in advancing the interests of this district".

Mr. Monaghan (1835 - 1910) served on the Nowra Showground Committee for about 35 years.

The monument was dedicated on Wednesday 14 February 1912.
