The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge is also known as High Street Bridge and carries High Street over the canal.

The bridges are numbered from Liverpool on this canal. A letter suffix like the 'A'on this bridge number 108A indicates that this bridge was built between bridges 108 and 109 after the canal was opened. In addition the bridge has been widened at some point and the modern road deck extends over the arch portion of the bridge.
