The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge is also known as Paradise Bridge and carries Eden Street over the canal.

Like many of the bridges on this canal the arch stones are painted white to help boat owners judge their approach through the bridge.

The bridges are numbered from Liverpool on this canal. A letter suffix like the 'B'on this bridge number 103B indicates that this bridge was built between bridges 103 and 104 after the canal was opened.

The bridge is near the centre of Blackburn and in 1996 the city renovated the area as part of the Blacburn City Challenge. They tided up the towpaths, bridges and gave all the bridges new number plates.
