This relief of a winged wheel is located at the staircase to the Stadtbahn station Marienplatz (on the right hand side while going downwards). The winged wheel is a common sign for railways and has frequently been used by the Deutsche Bundesbahn, the Deutsche Reichsbahn and their predecessors (e.g. on uniforms or engraved at stations), but also by railway companies in other countries. It stands for the velocity of railways as railways were the fastest way of movement until the invention of the airplane. Some say, the wings are related to the ancient greek/roman god Hermes/Mercury, who is typically shown with winged shoes.
This relief was once part of a former administration building of the SSB (Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen). When that building was torn down, this relief was included into the station Marienplatz in 2002. It symbolizes the electrification of the horse tramway in Stuttgart in 1893, therefore the lightnings surrounding it.
