Saint Francis Xavier College Church was founded in 1836 by Jesuits who had founded Saint Louis University. The current building had its cornerstone laid June 8, 1884. The church continues its Jesuit base and it ties with the University.
Preliminary designs for the church were made by architect Thomas Walsh, who had designed DuBourg Hall, for many years was the only school building on the new Saint Louis University campus. He died before the upper church was built and the design was taken over by Chicago architect, Henry W. Switzer. By this time also Father Henry C. Bronsgeest, S.J., a Dutchman had been appointed pastor of the church. He had seen churches all over Europe and wanted the College Church to emulate the Gothic Revival design of Cathedral of Saint Colman, in Cobh, Ireland. Father Bronsgeest's pastorate extended from 1888 to 1914 and oversaw the completion of the upper church.
