The sculpture , locally known as the "Headphones", has two hundred thousand signatures of past school students, from Adam Road Primary School to York High School, etched in copper plates which were collected in 1999 as part of the Sign In 2000 project where tiles with the signatures were laid in front of the Bell Tower, but were removed in 2014 during reconstruction work.
A feature of the sculpture is an interactive element that uses thousands of fibre optics to reflect an image from one end to the other.
