The mural is a tribute to the mining history of Sparwood and the areas of Michel and Natal just over the Alberta border. Both these two small communities are now considered ghost towns.

Prior to 1900, Sparwood was just a railroad stop and got its named from the trees in the area. The trees were shipped to the coast for the manufacturing of spars used for ships.

The presence of coal in the Elk Valley can be dated as far back as 1845 and became the major economic base for the surrounding communities.

Sparwood is proud of their mining history and there are antique mining equipment display at various location around the downtown area of Sparwood.
