The tertiary startet 65 millions years ago and the upfolding or the distant Alps was ongoing. The incredible tectonic forces lead to an increased volcanism in this area. Evidence can be found right here.
Hot lava blazed a trail through sandstone and formed a long chimney. Long after the volcano went cold and the lava solidified to basalt, wind and water began to wear out the rocks. Sandstone was eroded but the far more stable basalt stayed and formed this typical basalt chimney. Nowadays it is a wonderful lookout for you.
