Corps of Discovery II – Lewiston ID, is a 12-inch Lewis and Clark commemorative disk located near the Lewis and Clark Information Center at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers immediately northwest of downtown Lewiston, Nez Perce County, ID. The disk is mounted flush with the surface in the northeastern extension of a concrete patio overlooking the Clearwater River. The site also contains two other features. The first is a 24-inch tall inscribed stone monument set in 1955 that commemorates the fact that Lewis and Clark camped nearby on October 10, 1805. The second feature is a 12-inch by nine inch brass plaque that was placed in October, 2004, and mounted in the surface of the patio. It describes the commemorative disk. The disk is about 40 feet north of the northern-most point of the Lewis and Clark Information Center pavilion, about 35 feet south of the south shoreline of the Clearwater River, about 33 feet north of the northwest end of a displayed dugout canoe, and about 15 feet southeast of the southeast corner of a five-foot by six-foot by five-foot tall pink concrete block.

The Idaho Society of Professional Land Surveyors monumented the disk on February 9, 2005. It was dedicated during the “Among the Niimiipuu (Nez Perce)” national signature event on June 15, 2006, and visited by this correspondent on September 13, 2006. The disk is in the NGS database at PID = DJ9395: (visit link) . The disk has no distinctive stamping other than the standard design elements of the commemorative series of disks: CORPS OF DISCOVERY II – 200 YEARS TO THE FUTURE – PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP.

To reach from the south end of the US Highway 12 Bridge over the Clearwater River in the northeast section of Lewiston, go south and west on US Highway 12 West for about 0.4 miles to the intersection with 18th Street. At 18th Street, US Highway 12 is a right-hand turn leading northwest, and Main Street extends west (straight ahead). Continue straight ahead, now on Main Street, for about 0.5 miles to the intersection with D Street. Follow the westbound roadway to the right and go northwest and west on D Street for about 0.7 miles to the intersection with 1st Street. Continue west on D Street for another 100 yards to the driveway entrance to a parking area for the Lewiston Levee Recreational Trail. The driveway entrance is immediately west of a railroad crossing. Turn right and take the driveway entrance to a parking area for the recreational trail. From the northwest end of the parking area, walk northwest for about 100 yards on the elevated pedestrian walkway over US Highway 12. At the northwest end of the pedestrian walkway, turn half-left and walk north for about 100 feet to the Lewis and Clark Information Center pavilion. Walk north through the pavilion to the concrete overlook on the north side and the commemorative disk.
