A homemade tombstone marks the final resting place of Mary Ann (Benefield) Smith, in historic Forest Academy Cemetery, Como, TX.

Her headstone is made of sandstone like so many of that era. It has survived a 1971 cemetery vandalism, and is fairly weathered (please do not damage it further by chalking or rubbing it). Across the top is "In Memory Of", and below that, interestingly, is the compass and square of the Freemasons, which was generally males-only at the time. This could be an error -- she could have been with the Order of the Eastern Star -- or it could refer to her husband, William Rollins Smith, next to her. She could also have participated in the Freemason rituals with her husband. We don't know.

The headstone has been broken and repaired, obscuring part of the inscription, which says:

Mary A. Smith

Born. April 1st 1837.
Died. Sept. 13th 1872.

Aged 35 years, 5 mo, 12 days

A wife, mother [...]
Date of Birth: 4/1/1837

Date of Death: 9/13/1872
