"The pocket ore dock of the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad in Marquette represents a historically significant engineering feat. It was the first such dock of its type constructed on the Upper Great Lakes and is the only operating ore-loading facility in Marquette's harbors. Iron ore ships are loaded daily."
Watching an ore boat dock isn't something you get to see everyday. You can see huge ore boats up to 1000 feet long taking on iron pellets at Presque Isle and head out into the vastness of Lake Superior. Some of these ships are bigger than the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. You can call (906) 226-2006 for the arrival schedule or visit (

Sometimes ore boats unload coal here for the power plant that is nearby.
