This is an old forage or silage harvester made by Massey Harris. The difference between silage and forage is that silage is harvested fresh, or "wet" and must be stored in an oxygen free environment or it will heat and deteriorate. Forage is cut and dried in swaths then picked up by the forage harvester "dry" and stored in the same manner as dry hay. A large enclosed wagon is pulled along behind the harvester and the silage/forage is elevated into it. From the wagon the forage is pushed out at the storage area. If stored in a silo, silage is pushed from the wagon back into the harvester and elevated into the silo loader.

Can't say how old this harvester is - likely '40s or '50s.
