Cab Calloway was born on Christmas Day in 1907. At an early age he developed an interest in music and was tutored by the great Louie Armstrong. He became a renowned “Scat Singer” and band leader during the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s performing at the Cotton Club in Harlem, New York. During the hey-day of the big bands, Calloway toured throughout the United States, as well as Canada and Europe. When the public began to lose interest in the big band clubs, Calloway took his talents to Broadway where he began performing in musicals such as “Porgy and Bess,” and “Hello Dolly.” In 1993, President Bill Clinton presented Calloway with the National Medal of the Arts. Late in life a new generation of fans were introduced to Cab Calloway when he began appearing on Sesame Street. Cab Calloway suffered a stroke in 1994 and lived out his remaining years in a nursing home. He died on November 18, 1994 and was entombed in the mausoleum at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York.

Cabell “Cab” Calloway was born in Rochester, New York on December 25, 1907. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland where he discovered his love of music. He later moved to Chicago where he met the great Louie Armstrong who tutored him in the art of “Scat” Singing. In 1928, Calloway formed his own band he called “The Alabamians,” and headed to New York. In 1930, he and his band began performing at “The Cotton Club,” where he quickly became a regular. In 1931, Calloway had his first hit called “Minnie the Moocher,” which sold more than a million copies. Through his success at “The Cotton Club” he also appeared in such films as “The Big Broadcast” in 1932, “The Singing Kid,” in 1936 and “Stormy Weather,” in 1943. Capitalizing on his success, Calloway and his band toured throughout the United States as well as Canada and Europe where he performed with other greats such as Chu Berry, Cozy Cole and Dizzy Gilespie. In 1948 the interest in the big bands was waning and Calloway shift to Broadway where he spent a couple of years performing in the musical “Porgy and Bess.” Late in life, Calloway stared as the male lead in the all black case of “Hello Dolly,” which also featured Pearl Bailey. Calloway re-introduce himself to new fans when he began appearing on “Sesame Street.” Cab Calloway was present the National Medal of the Arts in 1993 by President Bill Clinton. In retirement, Calloway lived in White Plains, New York until he suffered a stroke in 1994. His final years were spent in a nursing home where he died on November 18, 1994 at the age of 86. Cab Calloway is resting in the mausoleum at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York.
