Within the Mt. Ida Cemetery Veteran section there are approximately 150 veterans interred there. The Canadian flag is about center of the area. The Royal Canadian Legion, Salmon Arm placed a war memorial in July 1981 to honor their local dead. Attached on the cairn are 50 small plaques with names of local veterans.
We honor all veterans and listed are the three men we have headstones.
Corporal Wallace Fredrick Dunn R.C.A.F - January 28, 1985, Age 64
Helgi Johannson L.A.C. R.C.A.F - March 18, 1991, Age 73
Corporal John C. King R.C.A.S.C - September 5, 1996, Age 81
The Mt. Ida Cemetery has approximately 1,550 interments and is approaching capacity. The City of Salmon Arm is in the process of acquiring a third parcel of land. The cemetery was established about 1917 with two known burials.
All the headstones are flush to the ground for easier maintenance in most of the cemetery, however in the very old section there are still some very interesting upright headstones. The lawn areas were lush and green with large trees surrounding most of the sections.
