Talented artist Russell Smith Jr. created this four-foot diameter curved cylinder that features a light decorative tracery of cutout design. Though untitled, the Smithsonian refers to the sculpture as "
The Tube".
This is very well done and one must admire the craftsmanship of the intricate designs.
The only comment on the Smithsonian webpage is:
A twisted tube, with decorative cut-out designs, set directly on the ground.
TITLE: The Tube
ARTIST(S): Russell Smith Jr.
DATE: Ca. 1982
MEDIUM: steel tube
CONTROL NUMBER: IAS MT000087

PHYSICAL LOCATION: Fort Missoula, Missoula, Montana
DIFFERENCES NOTED BETWEEN THE INVENTORY LISTING AND YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH: A concrete pad has been poured beneath the tube and it is now held off the ground by three steel posts, each of appropriate length and having steel plates welded to each end, the bottom plates bolted to the concrete. We assume that the upper plates are bolted to the sculpture.
The sculpture may have been moved from its original location, which would not have been far away. It is now at the coordinates given.
