E.M. Forster's novel "Maurice" is about a closeted gay man, as almost all gay men were in the early 1900s, who meets and falls in love with his friend Clive. Clive eventually gets married to a woman and ends the affair with Maurice..but they remain friends to some degree. While visiting Clive and his new wife... Maurice decides he will see a hypnotist who may be able to cure him of his sexuality.... but as he stays at Clive's country home, he has a one-night stand with one of the manor's laboring men, Alec.
After Maurice hurriedly leaves, Alec tries several times to contact Maurice by letter. Maurice does not respond. Eventually Alec sends a letter hinting of blackmail. Maurice makes arrangements to meet Alec at The British Museum...since they are unlikely to run into anyone there that they know. At the Museum, Alec does indeed persist at hints of blackmail... but the pair leave the Museum when the conversation goes elsewhere. To say more would be a spoiler.
