This memorial is reminiscent of Henri Levy, who was from 1921 - 1939 rabbi of Thionville. It stands beside the Synagogue of Thionville on the small square 'Place Rabbin-Henri-Levy' which is named after him since 2009.
Henri Levy (* 7. Juni 1883 in Balbronn; † 1942 KZ Auschwitz) attended a rabbinical seminary in France and became in 1910 rabbi in Mascara in the French colony of Algeria.
After the outbreak of WW I he enlisted in the Armée française d’Orient and served in the Gallipoli Campaign and at the Macedonian Front. He was awarded the Croix de guerre and the Legion of Honor. On August 30, 1921, the Israelite Consistory of Moselle appointed him rabbi of the district of Thionville.
At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 he let himself recruit in Forbach as rabbi for the French army. In 1940, he worked as a rabbi again in Saumur, which was in the territories occupied by the German Wehrmacht. There, he organizes the services of the Sabbath on Friday night and Saturday, and implements religious instruction.
He was arrested and deported with convoy number 8 from Angers into the Auschwitz concentration camp on July 20, 1942.
