As the plaque reads:

No. 5 Bombing & Gunnery School

During World War II aircrew training bases were established across Canada. No. 5 Bombing and Gunnery School was based on this site near Dafoe from 1941 to 1945 and trained hundreds of aircrew for the fight against tyranny. Aircrew trained in Canada under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan totalled 131,553 and some 40,000 gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy today.

This cairn recognizes the men and women who trained and served at the Dafoe Base
