Just before Christmas 2015, Alicia Cook and Haydn took off from Cessnock Airport (Hunter Valley) in their home made Airplane, a Vans RV7 to tour Australia; and Alicia is the 'force behind' their blog.

I have known Alicia from back in 2007, and in 2010 Haydn had the inspiration to buy and build their own plane. It took 3½ years, and then a lot more testing to be sure that they would be able to carry a suitable amount of gear for a good trip.
Gear include: lightweight camping gear, foldable bicycles, food, and clothes.

From personal communication:
"The RV7 It is an all aluminium plane, except for the canopy, engine cowls and wing tips etc. The aluminium is riveted together with solid rivets (not pop rivets) using a rivet gun and bucking bar. Our RV is a tail dragger, so the steering on the ground is achieved by the tail wheel. We chose the tail wheel version purely for its entertainment value, as it can provide some challenges at times."

"Our RV is powered by a Lycoming IO-360, fuel injected 180 HP, 4 cylinder aircraft engine, (some people use Subaru engines etc). The engine spins a Hartzell aluminium propeller which is variable pitch and constant speed. "All our avionics and communication equipment is from Garmin. They make some pretty neat gear for home built planes, which includes all flight instruments, engine instruments, engine monitoring and autopilot." "The RV7 cruises easily at 155 knots (around 300 kms/hr) at approx 68% power, while burning less then 32 l/hr of Avgas. Our RV7 holds 155 L of fuel which will allow us to stay airborne for about 4 hours without burning reserves."
