A first synagogue in Thionville was built in the Napoleonic era (1805), as a residential house in the Rue de la Poterne was transformed into a place of worship.
The synagogue at the boulevard Clemenceau was built in 1913 in Romano-Byzantine style. It was destroyed by fire by the Germans in 1940 while German soldiers preventing Thionville fire-fighters to intervene. The today's Nouvelle Synagogue is a modern building from 1956 at the same location.
