As the Plaque Reads:

York City,
York Colony, Assiniboia, NWT

To the East of this landmark one-half mile was the town site of 'York City'. The town site was established in 1882 by the York Farmers' Colonization Company as a trading post for over two hundred homesteaders who settled hereabouts in that and the year following. The postal department gave the post office the name 'Yorkton' when it was established in 1883.

Nearby, in the year 1885, a large stone grist mill was erected. In the same year sixty-two volunteers enlisted for the defence of the settlement during the Metis Rebellion, with headquarters and stockade established here.

With the coming of the railroad in 1890 the residents of York city moved to the present site of Yorkton. The last remaining landmark of the old townsite is the stone foundation of the grist mill on the East Bank of the Little White Sand River, immediate Northeast of here.
