text: "This Ridge fortified by the British formed the south line of defense August 29, 1779 N.Y. historical marker 1929"

This is part of the Clinton-Sullivan Campaign which drove the Indians from most of central New York. The Newtown Battle was the only actual battle in the campaign. The British and Indian side were outnumbered by the American forces.

"It was decided to invade the Six Nations by moving north up the Susquehanna River from Pennsylvania. The New York Brigade under Clinton was to assemble at Canajoharie on the Mohawk River. Clinton's force would then move southwest through New York, destroying whatever Indian villages were in its path. Upon linking up with Gen. Sullivan at Tioga (on the Pennsylvania-New York border), the combined force would move into the heart of Six Nations' land."
