As the Plaque Reads:

Gabriel Côté (MeeMay)

Cote spoke for the Saulteaux and Crees of the Fort Pelly Region in the Treaty negotiations at Fort Qu'Appelle in 1874. In this role he voiced many of the fears of the Indian people and gained for himself a wide reputation. Although himself a Metism he had long followed the nomadic habits of his Indian ancestors and because of his leadership had been designated a Chief by the Hudson's Bay Company. His death on December 12, 1884, was widely mourned.
