Energized by Art is a pilot project that was the brainchild of Cupertino-based
Hongyun Art School.
Several painted utility boxes were the result of a contest held by the city’s fine arts commission and the art school. Tommy Suriwong, who co-owns the school with his wife, Hongyun, said the school had been working with the city to assist with the annual Earth Day festival, so using art to help further a worthy cause seemed natural.
This art box stresses the message of don’t waste water. Drops of water coming from a faucet have water facts:
- a leaky faucet wastes 100 gallons oaf water each day
- less than 2% of Earth’s water supply is fresh water, and less than 1% is drinkable
- 3rd world women spend 100 million hours per day collecting water
- about 1/5 of the water in the U.S> is wasted
- 1/6 of people have no access to clean water
- it take 4 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of milk
- coffee takes 55 gallons of water to make
Handprints of the painters are placed on the top side, along with cute little icons of hearts, doves, stars and cats.
