Energized by Art is a pilot project that was the brainchild of Cupertino-based Hongyun Art School.

Several painted utility boxes were the result of a contest held by the city’s fine arts commission and the art school. Tommy Suriwong, who co-owns the school with his wife, Hongyun, said the school had been working with the city to assist with the annual Earth Day festival, so using art to help further a worthy cause seemed natural.

This art box stresses the use of drought tolerant plants which need less water. The phrase “Brown is the new Green” is emblazoned across the globe between two garden hoses.
