Energized by Art is a pilot project that was the brainchild of Cupertino-based
Hongyun Art School.
Several painted utility boxes were the result of a contest held by the city’s fine arts commission and the art school. Tommy Suriwong, who co-owns the school with his wife, Hongyun, said the school had been working with the city to assist with the annual Earth Day festival, so using art to help further a worthy cause seemed natural.
This art box features large tree with fruits and vegetables at the base of its trunk. The words "Reuse, Reduce, Recycle” appear on the trunk. Several iconic symbols, such as wind power, recycling and a power cords appear around the design. The back side of the box has a similar, less detailed design of the front. The left side of the box has a water faucet and the words “Conserve Water”. The right side of the box has a reusable grocery bag. The top side of the box has children’s handprints, presumably those of the painters.
