The State Capitol Building in Hartford has several sculptures honoring individuals important in Connecticut's history. The marble statue of Oliver Ellsworth is in a niche on second elevation of the west side of the building. The 6' high by 2.5' by 2' statue of was created by Hermon A. MacNeil and was installed in 1924.

The marble statue of Oliver Ellsworth, the fourth on the left of four figures, is standing in a Gothic style marble niche. He is wearing judicial robes over a waistcoat and shirt with ascot. He is holding a folio of folded papers at waist level in his left hand. The papers have a seal on the lower left corner. His right arm is by his side and his fingers are curled inward. The marble plinth on which he is standing has undergone repairs and is no longer inscribed with his name.

Oliver Ellsworth was born on April 29, 1745 in Windsor, CT. He studied at Yale and Princeton and was admitted to the bar in 1771. During the Revolutionary War he represented Connecticut in the Continental Congress. At the Constitutional Convention, he together with Roger Sherman, proposed the “Connecticut compromise” resolving the debate between large and small states over representation. He served on the committee that prepared the first draft of the Constitution and was first to use the term “United States” in the Constitution. He represented Connecticut in the Senate (1789–96) as a leader of the Federalists and served at the nation's 3rd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from March 4, 1796 to September 30, 1800.
