When a tree died the artist convinced the local council that instead of removing it it would make a suitable base for a sculpture.
The sculpture is of a pair of Red Tailed Black Cockatoos ( Calyptorhynchus banksii naso )named by John Gould in 1837. The birds were formerly common, but are now rare to uncommon and listed as Vulnerable. They have declined due to destruction of forests and woodlands, also competition for nest hollows with native and exotic species and the impact of fire. They live in the Eucalypt forests and feed on seeding Marri, Jarrah, Blackbutt, Karri, Sheoak and Snottygobble and are endemic to the southwest of Western Australia.
