This is a traditional Doukhobor Cemetery with rows always facing east and west. It was established in 1938 and there are approximately 60 gravesites and is still active. It is about 2.5 acres and surrounded by a wire fence. It is well maintained by the Doukhobor community.

Most of the grave markers are simple granite or slate. Most are flush to the ground, however there are some interesting headstones. A lot of the older headstones are inscribed in Russian.

We photographed the entire cemetery and also visited the community center across the street. We located a copy of a handwritten account of the forming of the cemetery posted on a bulletin board.

It is with great pleasure to include the transcription:

Hills Cemetery

January 1939? Three year old Polly Saprikin passed away. As there was no cemetery in Hill Siding (as it was known then) the people decided we had to have a cemetery. Two men, John M. Marortoff and George P. Markin were asked to go and register some land for it. The men had to go to Kaslo to the Government Land Registry office. There were no vehicle in Hill Siding at that time, so they caught a ride to New Denver with the freight truck (Burgas) Hitch. Hike to Kaslo and asked for the land. There they were given the go ahead. George and John used their thumb to get back to New Denver and the freight truck back to Hill Siding. Upon their return they said the request was granted to have a cemetery and little Polly was then buried there. In the spring it was staked out by surveyors and the land for the cemetery was register. John and George are both buried in the cemetery walked for.

The date should be 1938.
