In the charte de franchise, the Counts of Luxembourg allowed in 1239 the citizens of Thionville to build an enclosure with a watchtower. In the fourteenth century the belfry was build as a symbol of communal freedoms. Together with a communal building annex, it stood across the street from the old City Hall, housing among others a courtroom and a hospital for the poor.
The current tower height was reached in the first half of the sixteenth century, as under Charles V important fortification works were performed. The tower housed the great bell of the town, the today's bells are from 1656, 1689, 1746 and 1844. The current public clock was installed in 1859 by the Strasbourg workshop Schwilgué.
The belfry of Thionville is listed as monument historique since May 27th, 1980.
