In 1985 an addition of 5,500 square feet was completed without changing the architectural integrity of the original structure.

The Union Carnegie Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of the South Street Historic District.
The county has also added the Carnegie Library as part of the Union County Historical Trail.
