The Union Carnegie Library was the first Carnegie library built in South Carolina.

Funding from the Carnegie Foundation was granted in 1903 and construction was done in 1905.
In 1985 an addition of 5,500 square feet was completed without changing the architectural integrity of the original structure.
The Union Carnegie Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of the South Street Historic District.
The county has also added the Carnegie Library as part of the Union County Historical Trail.
