[FR] L’enceinte antique est érigée durant la seconde moitié du IVe siècle alors que l’occident romain perd une partie de sa stabilité politique et économique. Son rôle est clairement défensif, même si l’enceinte présente également une forte fonction symbolique liée à
l’affirmation de pouvoirs politiques locaux, notamment celle d’un pouvoir municipal renforcé par l’accession de la ville au statut de chef-lieu de cité.
[EN] The ancient wall was erected during the second half of the 4th century when the Western empire lost some of its political and economic stability. Its role was clearly defensive, even if the wall presents a strong symbolic function linked to the affirmation of local political power, notably that of municipal power strengthened by the city's accession to the statue of a regional capital.
