The State Capitol Building in Hartford has several sculptures honoring individuals important in Connecticut's history. The marble statue of Captain John Mason is in a niche on second elevation of the north side of the building. The 6' high by 2.5' by 2' statue of Captain John Mason was created by Paul Wayland Bartlett and dedicated on July 30, 1908.
The marble statue of Captain John Mason, the fifth from the left of six figures, is standing in a Gothic style marble niche. He is wearing armor on his upper chest, shoulders, and arms over a tunic, and knee length boots. He is holding a large sword, diagonally, below the hilt, in his right hand. The sword is passes through wide cloth loop attached to his trousers and rests on the plinth by his right foot. The marble plinth he is standing on is inscribed: MASON.
John Mason was born in England in 1600 and was a Lieutenant in the English army. He emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1632 and moved west to settled along the Connecticut River and became the founder of Windsor, CT. He was a leader in the Connecticut militia, rose to the rank of captain and commanded of the colonial militia during a successful expedition against the Pequot Indians during the Pequot War of 1637.
