St James Church was built in 1883-1884. It was built on land donated by the Fisher Manufacturing Company. In the 1800's it was built as a mission church to St Philips parish to serve the expanding community due to the mills in the area.In 1887, Fisherville was set apart as a mission to serve the 800 Catholics in South Grafton, most of whom came from Quebec and Ireland. The neighborhood became a community of immigrants as people that migrated from Poland, Italy, Lithuania and Slovakia settled in Fisherville.
The church structure is still intact from the 1883 building, however the synthetic siding covers much of the original church exterior.
