"The rehabilitation and widening of the Thurston Avenue Bridge is the first of its kind in New York State and possibly the entire United States. The project's most unique, character defining features are the induction bent tubular shaped parabolic steel arches, which are rare in vehicular bridges. Induction bending of steel arch shapes has only been employed on a handful of bridges across the U.S."
"The first arch bridge at the site was built by Ithaca Railway (trolley) system to bring students, faculty, and staff from downtown Ithaca to Cornell University. It was replaced in 1960 with a box shaped deck arch. The University and the surrounding area had significantly outgrown the existing bridge which was operating at maximum capacity and a very low level of service. Improved function, safety, and movement through this critical corridor were necessary and the bridge could not accommodate these needs without major rehabilitation or replacement."
