The elevation here is about 1,400 feet and rolling with twisting roads. This was once the route east from Folsom to Coloma or Placerville, and later the route east or west for the Pony Express and Wagon Trains that came after 1859. The Pony Express delivered news of Lincoln's election only days afterward. The land lies between two forks of the American River that now feed Folsom Lake.
