In Castine, at the remnants of Fort George, is this cannon pointing toward the Maine Maritime Academy and the center of Castine.
The fort is located near the top of the slope that Castine is laid on. It is at the intersection of Battle Avenue and Wadsworth Cove Street. There is a small parking lot off Wadsworth Cove Street that is near the cannon.
The cannon is southwest of the earthworks of the fort, not far from Battle Avenue. The barrel is mounted on a wooden cradle with wheels. The wheels have an iron band on the contact surface. The iron barrel is a little rusty. The 'business end' is pointed toward the campus of the Maine Maritime Academy and the center of Castine, and out to Penobscot Bay. On the cradle, below the barrel is the number 12.
I'm not sure if this cannon was original to the fort or not. I could not find any info in the National Register of Historic Places application.
The fort was used during the American Revolutionary War and War of 1812. In both wars, the British successfully occupied the fort to the end of the war.
In the 1960s, the fort was restored by people in Castine. The fort was placed on the list in 1969. The cannon possibly was placed then.
