Swami Sivananda (8 September 1887 – 14 July 1963) was a Hindu spiritual teacher and a proponent of Yoga and Vedanta. He was the founder of the Divine Life Society (DLS) in 1936, Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy (1948) and author of over 200 books on yoga, Vedanta and a variety of subjects. He established Sivananda Ashram, the headquarters of the DLS, on the bank of the Ganges at Sivanandanagar, Rishikesh.
Sivananda Ashram was the first ashram to open its doors to the West and to introduce the science of yoga in the 1930s. The Sivananda Ashram is the headquarters and spiritual focal point of a vast worldwide organisation called "The Divine Life Society." The Society encompasses more than 300 branches around the world, as well as individual devotees in India and abroad. Sivananda Ashram is dedicated to the service of all and is itself benefited by the generous donations of the devotees who want to see that service continue. It is in the Ashram that any person interested in the spiritual life, whether a member of the DLS or not, can come and be nurtured by the spirit that pervades this place.
The Memorial Arch was inaugurated by Hon. Sri Vir Bahadur Singh, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on August 1987. It is located on Haridwar Rishikesh Badrinath Rd (Hwy 58) near the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh.
