In Castine, by Leavitt Hall on the campus of the Maine Maritime Academy, is a flag pole that has a brass bell mounted on it.

The flag pole is in a grassy area between several buildings and is off Pleasant Street. The pole is near other monuments.

The bell is mounted on the southern side of the flag pole, roughly head high. It is made of brass and is banged up. There is an inscription on the surface: "Azalea City 1943." The clasp has a rope handle. Thus, the bell probably is used at least once in a while.

I tried to find information about the ship, but I couldn't find any definitive info. There was a cargo ship that was torpedoed in 1942. Another ship was a C2 Navy cargo ship delivered on July 1943 and served along life before being scrapped in 1976.
