The original SkyTrain line opened in 1985 from Waterfront to New Westminster. In 1988 Columbia Station was opened, the first station on an extension to Surrey.

Columbia Station today operates as a transfer station where the Millennium line branches from the Expo line. As a result this station is very busy with people changing lines if travelling from Surrey to the Lougheed corridor. In 2011 there was an average of 24,976 passengers at Columbia Station.
