After receiving a plot of land in Thionville near the Moselle, the Order of Saint Clare built a convent in late Renaissance style, which was completed in 1641. In the 18th century some annexe were built which served as the girls' school of the convent.
During the French Revolution the convent was secularized and the buildings used for military purposes. From 1802 the former monastery served as municipal hospital. Since 1898 is here the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall), the former chapel is now used as ceremonial hall (salle de mariages).
