This type of map is a common site in Cambridge and uses a common format. The mounting is a thin pillar that is about two metres tall. The top of the pillar shows the name of the area and local areas with directional arrows to direct the observer in the right direction.

The map area of the pillar has two maps. The larger map, using the full width of the pillar, shows the central area of Cambridge and includes a "you are here" indication. A red box indicates the area covered by the smaller map. The smaller map shows the local area and also has a "you are here" indication.

The larger map has a north arrow in the lower left (or right) corner and this indicates the direction of north for both maps. The width of the smaller map indicates a walking time of about five minutes. The large map has a grid across it with the lines coloured red. The grid is numbered from top to bottom (1 to 9) and letters across from left to right (A to I).

Park type areas are shown in green with water features, such as the River Cam, shown in blue. Roads and pedestrianised areas are also shown and named. Churches, of which there are many, are indicated by orange circles containing a number. These are cross-referenced to a key where the churches names are shown. There are other numbers in square boxes that indicate areas of interest such as colleges, museums, galleries and shopping locations. There are also sybols to indicate such things as bus stops, toilets, car parks, taxi ranks, cycle parks, etc.
